Messengers Style AUTHOR: Philippe
Bialobos PAGES: 96 PUBLISHER: Editions
Assouline SIZE: 9x11 in. PRICE: $24.95
Up from the StreetStreet culture has always been an inspiration to
cutting-edge designers. And the ultimate in street style can
generally be found adorning the bike-sculpted bodies of urban
bicycle messengers. Messengers Style brings bike messenger
fashion to the glossy pages of a coffee table book. New York
photographer Philippe Bialobos invited scores of messengers into his
studio for sessions, producing bold black and white and color
portraits on stark white backdrops that capture the energy of these
urban warriors. From the rawest newbies to longterm bikers, the
faces and bodies here tell the story of days spent on the move and
in the elements (Thomas, who has been a messenger for 23 years, has
acquired two broken fingers, one fractured wrist, A.C.L. knee
surgery and two broken teeth). And the fashions -- a mix of
functional and funky -- look like they could come off a runway (next
season they probably will). —
